Shanika and Henry Rowe - Serpents Rugby League & Sporting Club

Shanika and Henry Rowe were recognised as a part of the Shire’s Volunteer Recognition Program for their hard work with the Serpents Rugby League & Sporting Club. Shanika and Henry received a $50 voucher to a restaurant of their choice located within the Shire.

We asked Shanika and Henry a few questions about their experience volunteering:

How did you get involved in volunteering for your club/group?

Shanika and I both got involved as our little sister plays in the Serpents league club. Last year I had the privilege of coaching her U/8 team for the season. I myself (Shanika) volunteered this season also because my sister was a member of the team. The team initially had no coach, and I didn't want the kids to go without a coach, so I happily put my hand up.

How long have you been involved in volunteering?

This would have been my (Henry) second season as a volunteer coach and it would be Shanika's first season as a volunteer coach.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

We both love this role as some kids have never played before so too see the team grow together and have confidence in themselves is very rewarding. Shanika and I have both been brought up playing rugby league ourselves, and to be able to pass on what we know is rewarding on its own. To see the team use the techniques we teach them shows that they love what we have to offer them.

What makes your club/group special to you?

This club is special to the both of us not only because our little sister is now involved, but our cousins are as well. The amazing bond we have made with the kids throughout the club and the parents who have become close friends to us both have made it awesome.

Why would you recommend others to get involved in volunteering?

We would recommend people volunteering because it's so very rewarding in every way. The smiles you get to bring to so many faces, but also having young ones looking up to you.
