The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale Library Services capped off a wonderful first year in its not-so-new Byford home with a special first birthday bash on Saturday, 15 July 2023.
More than 553 attendees joined in the celebrations, with roving performers and a bunch of activities providing fun for all ages on the day.
The Library has experienced tremendous success since opening doors at the former Byford Hall building on 19 July 2022.
Over the past 12 months the Library has registered 1,022 new members and welcomed a staggering 39,132 customers through its doors.
SJ Library staff have delivered more than 160 programs and events, and more than 72,000 items have been borrowed.
Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said the Library’s relocation had been a resounding success.
“It’s been amazing to see Byford welcome our SJ Library with open arms,” Cr Rich said.
“Our friendly staff have quickly endeared themselves to a large collection of new members, and it’s fantastic to see the Shire’s busiest suburb making full use of this invaluable community resource.”
Given the massive popularity of the library, opening hours will be extended from 9am – 3pm on Saturdays in the near future, allowing SJ residents more time to visit and take advantage of what’s on offer.
The Library’s relocation followed a $2.65 million refurbishment of the former Byford Hall building, funded by the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
Adding to the success of the relocation has been the launch of the Shire’s Mobile Library Service.
The Mobile Library was designed to ensure the Shire’s southern suburbs would continue to have access to important resources following the relocation, and its weekly visits to Mundijong, Serpentine and Jarrahdale have made it a staple in those communities.
“Our southern- residents have embraced the Mobile Library since its very first day on the road,” Cr Rich said.
“It’s been wonderful to see locals enjoying this innovative new service and I look forward to what the next 12 months has in store.”
