Byford youth share ideas for future skate park upgrades

Upgrades to the Byford Skate Park took a significant step forward with local youth sharing their ideas at the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale’s first community workshop for the project on Tuesday, 7 March 2023.

The workshop proved a huge success with approximately 50 young Byford residents participating by completing surveys and providing feedback on the design process.

Some of the ideas generated by the local youth ranged from adding new skate elements to the park to how they would incorporate lighting and seating.

Skate park design and construction experts Skate Sculpture, who are working alongside the Shire to deliver the project, were on deck to help facilitate the session.

Skate Sculpture Project Manager Mat de Koning said the workshop was a great way to engage the demographic who use the park the most.

“All of the kids at the workshop are the kids who use the park every day, so to have them telling us directly how they want their skate park to be designed is really valuable intel,” Mat said.

“It was great to have such invested participants.

"The interest levels were really high and it gave us a great idea of what the locals would like included in the park.”

The Byford Skate Park upgrades are proposed to include an extension to the skating surface, new skate elements, seating, lighting and improvements to the overall precinct.

The project is being funded by the State Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
