Burn SMART: Do you know how to Burn SMART?

Published on Tuesday, 9 June 2020 at 10:10:00 AM

With unrestricted burning now in place, the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale Bushfire Ready Group wants to remind the community how to burn safely as part of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) ‘Burn SMART’ campaign.

The Burn SMART campaign’s key messages are to:

  • Plan smart - Burn SMART;
  • Planned burning can help you to reduce the amount of flammable material on your property, potentially reducing the impact of bushfire;
  • In the wrong conditions, a planned burn can escape and become an uncontrollable fire. If you plan to burn, Burn SMART;
  • YOU are responsible for any burns on your property and must take care to recognise and manage risks;
  • Create a burn plan using the Burn SMART Checklist and Burn SMART Guide (available at dfes.wa.gov.au/plannedburning);
  • Always contact your local government before you burn, to check rules or restrictions in the area; and
  • You can register your burn by calling DFES’ Communications Centre on 9395 9209.

Remember, it is better to contact the Shire before you conduct your winter burn and to Burn SMART, rather than have one of our Volunteer Bushfire Fighting Brigades being called out to your property to extinguish a fire.
