Serpentine Cemetery
Established in 1856, Serpentine Cemetery has served the districts of Serpentine for over 150 years.
Historical information
The Serpentine Cemetery was established for the settlers in and around the Serpentine district, which included settlements at Serpentine, Keysbrook, Mardella and Hopeland and Mundijong. The original cemetery had separate Catholic and Protestant sections, as was customary at the time.
It is the final resting place of many old local families who lived and worked here during Mundijong's founding, through wars and rapidly changing industry and technology.
Physical description
Serpentine Cemetery is set amongst mature native trees, with graves dating from the early days of settlement to the present day. Those that remain are mostly made of marble or other stone. There is also a red brick ashes wall at the northern end of the cemetery.
Present day
Today, the cemetery is the final resting place for more than 600 people. Since the mid-20th century, it has also been for those who contributed to the localities abutting Serpentine, and for people outside the district of all denominations.
