Junior Council
The first Junior Council in the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale was inaugurated in February 2026. Junior Council is a new initiative, and we are proud to be the third council in Western Australia to run this program.
What is the Junior Council?
The Junior Council is a Shire‑run program for local Year 6 students. The program involves 16 students from primary schools and colleges within the Shire. The initiative is fully supported by participating school principals and parents.
The Junior Council gives participating students the chance to:
- learn how local government works, including how their Shire operates and how decisions are made
- learn how to be community-aware
- learn how to represent and advocate for the needs and ideas of their age group.
Through monthly meetings, participants gain confidence and develop skills in debating, public speaking, resilience, and leadership.
How do I get involved in the Junior Council?
If you’re in Year 5 (2026) and you’re keen to participate on the Junior Council in 2027, let your school know towards the end of the 2026 school year.
Your school will choose students who have great ideas, want to learn new skills, or would enjoy representing their classmates.
If you’re home‑schooled, your parent or guardian can apply directly through the Shire’s Junior Council Program Officer.
