Better Beginnings: A Strong Start for Young Readers

SJ Library Services proudly supports Better Beginnings, a state-wide family literacy program that helps children develop a love of reading from birth. Through this initiative, we provide families with free literacy kits designed to encourage early learning and bonding through books, stories, and songs.

Free early literacy kits available from your Byford Library

Baby Book Box

Every baby born in the Shire can receive a blue Better Beginnings Baby Book Box, filled with a book and resources to support early literacy. These are distributed through Child Health Nurses, so be sure to ask for yours at your next visit.

Preschool Book Box

Our library staff visit local kindergartens to distribute the red Better Beginnings Preschool Book Box, ensuring young learners have access to books and activities that support their literacy journey.

Better Beginnings Backpack

Designed for young readers under six years old, the Better Beginnings Backpacks are updated by our library staff and contain several books, a musical instrument, an activity and a puppet or stuffed toy based on the theme of the bag.

Why early literacy matters

Engaging with books, stories, and songs from an early age helps children build strong language and literacy skills, setting them up for success in school and beyond. Better Beginnings is here to support families in making reading a fun and daily habit.
