Free Verge Plant Giveaway Program

This initiative is proudly co-funded by Water Corporation’s Waterwise Greening Scheme and forms part of our ambition for the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale to be a leading waterwise community.
The Waterwise Greening Scheme offers residents the opportunity to participate in greening initiatives by providing free verge plants on an annual basis. Greening with waterwise plants can help with:
- Improving community health and wellbeing
- Increasing biodiversity and provide habitat for local wildlife
- Improving local amenity
- Urban cooling
- Local water quality.
The Free Verge Plant Program operates annually in partnership between Landcare SJ and the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale.
Trees and shrubs play a crucial role in our built environment, and if not selected with care, they may lead to underground issues. A diverse selection of small trees, shrubs, and groundcovers will be available, taking into account the relevant verge planting regulations.
Planting your new verge plant
Soil Preparation: The optimal time for soil preparation is during autumn or spring. Begin by clearing the area of weeds, rocks, and debris. Next, remove the topsoil to create space for soil amendments, compost, and mulch, ensuring the level is 100-150mm below the adjacent kerb or footpath.
Planting and Mulching: It is essential to plant trees prior to shrubs. When digging planting holes, ensure they are at least twice the diameter of the plant's pot. Consider incorporating a slow-release native fertiliser (free from phosphorus) into the planting hole to provide plants with optimal nourishment during their first year of growth.
Once the verge is planted, it becomes the responsibility of the resident. They also have the opportunity to register it as a Managed Verge.
