Free Verge Plant Giveaway Program

This initiative is proudly co-funded by Water Corporation’s Waterwise Greening Scheme and forms part of our ambition for the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale to be a leading waterwise community.
The Waterwise Greening Scheme offers residents the opportunity to participate in greening initiatives by providing free verge plants on an annual basis. Greening with waterwise plants can help with:
- Improving community health and wellbeing.
- Increasing biodiversity and providing habitat links for local wildlife.
- Improving local amenity and providing cooler neighbourhoods.
- Reducing water use.
The Shire in collaboration with Landcare SJ operates an annual Free Verge Plant Program, promoting the use of waterwise and native plants.
Property owners who wish to develop their verge with landscaping are encouraged to do so. If relevant conditions are met, waterwise and native gardens and other verge treatments may NOT require prior approval for installation. For further information please refer to the Shire’s Urban and Rural Verge Guidelines.
When choosing your plants, keep in mind those that are suitable for local conditions and soil types, visibility for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles, overhead powerlines and other infrastructure.
A diverse selection of small trees, shrubs, and groundcovers will be available as part of the giveaway program.
The Shire encourages the use of plants native to the Swan Coastal Plain. These plants are hardy, waterwise and in some cases fire resistant. Keeping It Local is a good resource for selecting species and can be found in the Useful Documents section on this page.

Prepping for your new verge plants
Soil Preparation:
- The optimal time for soil preparation is during autumn or spring.
- Begin by clearing the area of weeds, rocks, and debris.
- Next, remove the topsoil to create space for soil amendments, compost, and mulch, ensuring the level is 100-150mm below the adjacent kerb or footpath.
Planting, Mulching & Watering:
- Ensure the planting hole is at least twice the diameter of the pot size.
- Consider incorporating a slow-release native fertiliser (phosphorus free) to provide plants with optimal nourishment during their first year of growth.
- Place plant into the hole and backfill with soil ensuring the surrounding soil is lightly push down.
- Create a small watering well around the outside of the plant to capture the water and give the plant a good watering (half a bucket of water).
- Ensure the mulch is kept free from the plant stem.
- Ensure the site is free of weeds, and water when required during the warmer months.
Property owners are responsible for the gardens, irrigation and maintenance of their verge adjacent to their property. For more information on verge care and upkeep please see the links at the bottom of this page.
