The values of service, contribution and community were all celebrated this Australia Day at the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale’s annual Australia Day community breakfast and Community Citizen of the Year Awards and Citizenship Ceremony.
The Auspire – Australia Day WA Community Citizen of the Year Awards recognise people and groups who go above and beyond to make Serpentine Jarrahdale a great place to live, through service, leadership and genuine care for others.
The award ceremony included the Shire’s Clem Kentish Community Service Award, which recognises people who have made a longstanding positive impact on their local community.
The 2026 Australia Day Award winners:
Clem Kentish Community Service Award: Neil Kentish
Community Citizen of the Year: Stuart McLellan
Senior Community Citizen of the Year: Merri Harris
Young Community Citizen of the Year: Jake Branley
Active Citizenship Award: SJ Lions Club
Active Citizenship Certificate of Appreciation: Keysbrook Community Group
Shire President Rob Coales said Australia Day was a fitting time to recognise both community service and new citizens.
“These awards acknowledge individuals and groups who go above and beyond, often quietly and without expectation of recognition, to make our community a better place,” President Coales said.
“Our volunteers, community leaders, young achievers and local champions represent the very best of the Australian spirit. They remind us that service does not always wear a uniform or hold a title, rather it is found in commitment, generosity and care for others.
“To our award recipients: thank you. Your actions strengthen our community and inspire others to get involved. You demonstrate what a fair go looks like in practice, lifting others up and giving back to the place you call home.”
The Shire also welcomed 21 new Australian citizens, with conferees coming from seven countries, including Zambia, India, Fiji and the United Arab Emirates.
“What makes SJ such a great place to live is not just where we are, but who we are,” President Coales said.
“We are a diverse community, built on people who care deeply about one another and give their time to make this place better for everyone.
“SJ is a growing Shire, and with growth comes change. Australia Day invites us not only to reflect on our past, but to recommit to the future we want to build together, one that is inclusive, respectful and fair.”
