The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale will phase out the use of Second-Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs) across all Shire managed properties, in a move to help protect native wildlife.
At its July Ordinary Council Meeting, Council unanimously resolved to stop using SGARs, which are a form of rodent control chemical that linger in a rodent.
BirdLife Australia has long raised concerns about the use of SGARs, which are known to harm native species, particularly owls, that feed on poisoned rodents. There have also been reports of domestic pets affected by the poison.
The Shire will transition towards the safer First Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (FGARs), which pose a lower risk of secondary poisoning. It will also seek to implement a range of other pest control measures that reduce the need for baiting.
The Shire will roll out an awareness campaign to help residents, businesses and property owners make informed choices about how they can control pests, including building awareness on the methods available.
