Bushwalkers and trail users are being invited to explore Jarrahdale in a new way, with the launch of Awaken the Trails, a fresh initiative to experience intertwining trails, shared-use etiquette for walkers and riders, and local heritage, which starts on 1 June 2026.
The program is being delivered through a partnership between the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale and WA multi-award-winning local operator Off The Beaten Track and aims to encourage people to safely discover the Shire’s expanding trail network.
A major highlight of the program will be the launch of the Jarrah Trail, a new experience, intertwining loop trails in Jarrahdale, which will be unveiled as part of three guided heritage hikes. The trail has been developed by the Jarrahdale Heritage Society, with support from the Shire, Bendigo Bank, Byford Rotary and the SJ Men’s Shed.
The Awaken the Trails initiative also supports the safe use of the Shire’s new horse trails, launched in October 2025, through a new partnership with the Australian Trail Horse Riders Association (ATHRA). The collaboration focuses on educating walkers and riders about shared-trail etiquette to ensure trails remain safe and enjoyable for everyone. The Jinker and Whim horse trails formed part of the Peel Regional Trails project, which received funding through a 2022 Australian Government election commitment which invested $8 million into community and sporting infrastructure, delivered in partnership with DBCA.
Shire President Rob Coales said the initiative reflects the community’s growing passion for outdoor recreation and respect for the natural environment:
“Awaken the Trails showcases the very best of Serpentine Jarrahdale: our landscapes, our heritage and the strong partnerships that make projects like this possible,” Shire President Coales said.
“As more people discover and enjoy our trails, it’s vital that we continue to promote shared-use etiquette and environmental care, so these places remain accessible, safe and enjoyable for everyone.”
“Our residents care deeply about the natural beauty of Serpentine Jarrahdale, and the trails are a fantastic way for the community, and tourists, to get out and experience the beauty of our shire”.
“Partnering with Off The Beaten Track gives the community the chance to get outside and learn something new about our environment and enjoy the bushland - redefining what it means to explore the great outdoors”.
Supporting information will also be rolled out online, including a new horse trails webpage, updates to existing trail-readiness content and the integration of etiquette resources for trail users.
Planning around the etiquette campaign also aligns with future trail-related improvements across the Shire, including a proposed horse-friendly zone at the RV Park and the potential development of a shorter version of the popular Jinker Trail.
More information about Awaken the Trails and guided hike bookings is available through Off The Beaten Track.
