NAIDOC Week 2022: Shire to celebrate with series of local events

The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale will celebrate NAIDOC Week with several local events set to recognise the rich history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Held from 3 – 10 July 2022, NAIDOC Week highlights the achievements of First Nations people and is an opportunity for all Australians to learn more about the contributions they have made.

The Shire will be holding a number of events during NAIDOC Week. More information on each of these can be found below.

Serpentine Falls Walking Tours: Boorloo Aboriginal Cultural Experiences

Session 1

  • Tuesday, 5 July 2022
  • 30pm – 6pm
  • Serpentine Falls, Falls Road, Serpentine

Session 2

  • Saturday, 9 July 2022
  • 3pm – 4.30pm
  • Serpentine Falls, Falls Road, Serpentine

Owner and Director of Boorloo Aboriginal Cultural Experiences Olman Walley will lead this educational tour through the picturesque Serpentine Falls.

An engaging experience, the walking tour will allow attendees to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures as well as focussing on the local flora and fauna found at the Falls.

Craft workshop: Weaving Bags

  • 10am – 2pm
  • Serpentine Jarrahdale Community Resource Centre, 2 Paterson Street, Mundijong

Inspired by Indigenous traditions, this workshop will teach you how to create your own woven bag.

This event is for youth aged 12-17.

Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!

  • 30pm – 4pm
  • Youth Space, Briggs Park Pavilion, Mead Street, Byford

The Shire’s Youth Team has teamed up with Street Yarning to deliver this cultural showcase event.

Join in the fun with canvas hand painting, bush poetry, music or just a yarn.

There will be a free sausage sizzle, drinks, activities and giveaways.

This event is for youth aged 12-17.

NAIDOC Movie Night: ‘Wash My Soul In The River’s Flow’

Celebrate NAIDOC Week in 2022 with a screening of the beautiful celebration of two of Australia's most beloved musicians in “Wash my Soul in the River's Flow”.

Seventeen years in the making, “Wash my Soul in the River's Flow” is a cinematic reinvention of a legendary concert.

A celebration of the love, lives and luminous talent of artists Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter.

Rated PG, tickets are open to all ages. Children under 12 must be supervised.
