When is the next Local Government Election?

The next election will be held on Saturday, 18 October 2025.

Who is conducting the election?

The election is being conducted by the Western Australian Electoral Commission (WAEC).

Who is the Shire's Returning Officer?

The Returning Officer is appointed by the WAEC and is responsible for the conduct and processes associated with the Shire’s election. Contact details for the Western Australian Electoral Commission’s appointed Returning Officer will be made available as soon possible.

How many vacancies exist for the next Local Government Election?

The following vacancies exist for the October 2025 election: 

  • North West Ward – one Councillor (4 year term)
  • North Ward – two Councillors (1 x 4 year term, 1 x 2 year term)
  • South Ward – one Councillor (4 year term)

What will be the Shire's Ward structure for the 2025 election, including their Councillor representation?

The Shire is divided into three districts; the North ward, the North West ward, and the South ward. Each ward is represented by two Councillors.

When do nominations for candidates open and close?

Nominations open Thursday 28 August 2025 and close Thursday 4 September 2025 at 4pm.

Who can nominate to be a candidate?

Anyone who is on the Shire’s Electoral Roll as a resident, or a non-resident owner or occupier of rateable property within the Shire (and is not disqualified) can nominate. Nominees of a body corporate cannot stand for election to Council.

Who is entitled to vote?

Anyone enrolled on one of the Shire’s Electoral Rolls:

  • Residents Roll – Individuals who live in the Shire and who are enrolled on the State Electoral Roll.
  • Non-Resident Owner and Occupiers Roll – Non-residents owners or occupiers of rateable property in the Shire. Eligibility conditions apply.

If I own a property in the Shire but I do not live there, can I still vote in elections?

Depending on your circumstances, yes, you can. Read the Non-Resident Owners and Occupiers Roll information on our website here to check that you are eligible and then complete the relevant Eligibility Claim Form.

If I run a business that occupies a property in the Shire, but I do not live in the Shire, can I still vote?

Depending on your circumstances, yes, you can. Read the Non-Resident Owners and Occupiers Roll information on our website here to check that you are eligible and then complete the relevant Eligibility Claim Form.

How do I enrol to vote?

  • Residents Roll – you must complete an enrolment form via the Australian Electoral Commission website.
  • Non-Resident Owner and Occupiers Roll – you must complete the relevant Eligibility Claim Form and submit this to the Shire.

When is the last day I can enrol to vote?

  • Residents Roll - you must enrol with the Western Australian Electoral Commission no later than 5pm Friday, 22 August 2025.
  • Non-Resident Owner and Occupiers Roll - forms must be submitted to the Shire no later than 5pm Friday, 22 August 2025. The Shire will notify all applicants for this roll of the outcome of their application by 5pm, 29 August 2025.

If I have recently moved house, will I still get my postal voting package?

You must ensure that you update your address details on the Australian Electoral Commission website.

When are ballot papers due to be returned?

Ballot papers can be completed anytime but must be returned by 6pm, Saturday 18 October 2025 to be included in the count for the election.

Where can I vote?

The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale conducts its election by postal voting in conjunction with the Western Australian Electoral Commission. Voting packages will be posted to electors prior to each election.

A polling place will be open on election day (18 October 2025) at the Shire’s administration office for electors to return their completed ballot papers. A ballot box will also be provided from the day ballot papers are sent out until 6pm on election day at the Shire’s administration office.

What happens if I don't receive my voting package?

If you haven't received your voting package in the post by 6 October 2025 please contact the Shire to complete an Application for Replacement Postal Voting Papers Form. This form needs to be completed at the Shire offices and can be done anytime during business hours. If you cannot attend during business hours you can complete the form on the Election Day (18 October 2025) between 8am to 6pm at the Shire office.

When will I know the result of the election?

The count commences at 6pm on election day (18 October 2025) and results are usually available later that evening on the Western Australian Electoral Commission's website.
