We’ve successfully completed major drainage and stormwater management improvements along Kardan Boulevard in Byford, in our ongoing efforts to improve local infrastructure.
Between May and early June, our Operations team did an extensive clean of the 700-metre open drain between Kardan Boulevard and Hopkinson Road. The team removed almost 700 tonnes of debris from the drain which had built up over time and prevented water from flowing effectively.
Following the pre-Winter clearing, the next phase of the drainage improvements began with contractors engaged to upgrade the two median islands along the northern end of Kardan Boulevard. The works included re-excavating the drainage swales within the medians to increase their capacity to store, infiltrate and treat the initial water flows off the road.
Prior to this work being completed, the medians had very little capacity to store or infiltrate any water off the road, contributing to past flooding issues.
Solid drainage pit lids were also replaced with grated lids now allowing water to enter the drainage network during heavy rains.
Importantly, these improvements were completed with minimal impact to surrounding vegetation.
We’re happy to report that since these works have been completed, there have been no reports of flooding on Kardan Boulevard, demonstrating the effectiveness of the upgraded system.
The Shire will continue to monitor the area and is committed to maintaining and improving our local drainage networks and relative infrastructure.
