The Shire’s Cemeteries Advisory Group has met for the first time since new appointments were made after last year’s local government election.

The meeting comes following the Shire Council’s adoption of an updated policy to guide the management and operation of the Serpentine and Jarrahdale Cemeteries.

The revised policy, Serpentine and Jarrahdale Cemeteries, replaces the former Grant of Right of Burial policy, and ensures the Shire’s ongoing compliance with the Cemeteries Act 1986 and the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale Cemeteries Local Law 2005.

It provides clear direction for the administration of burial and memorial services, covering plot reservations, monument installations, ashes placement, record keeping, and stakeholder communication.

It also identifies opportunities for future improvements, including plot expansion at Jarrahdale Cemetery, gazebo installation, driveway repairs, enhanced mapping, and better data management.

The review was informed by consultation with the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board, Shire officers, and other local governments to ensure the policy reflects contemporary standards, legislative requirements, and community expectations.

The Shire’s Cemeteries Advisory Group provides advice to Council on the management of the Shre’s two cemeteries, future planning for the cemeteries and matters related to protecting the cemeteries’ heritage. It consists of Elected Members and eight community members.
