Shire President Rob Coales has met with the Premier’s Office in Perth to talk about Mundijong, Kulija and Mandurah (MKM) roads and calling on State Government investment for this critical east–west road corridor.
President Coales was joined by City of Rockingham Mayor Lorna Buchan, showing how we’re working with neighbouring councils to tackle this together.
At present, entire sections of this corridor are constrained in capacity, safety, and freight handling capability, limiting its effectiveness as a strategic connector for housing development, defence mobilisation, and freight efficiency.
The Infrastructure Benefits
Investing in the MKM road upgrades delivers a unique multi-sector return for Western Australia. It has the benefit of a cooperative and collaborative set of local governments, who stand ready to assist the State in delivering this essential infrastructure upgrade in order to:
- Accelerate housing delivery - unlock many more thousands of additional lots across both local governments, supporting the State’s housing affordability and supply objectives, and helping address acute population growth pressures.
- Demonstrate defence readiness - ensuring seamless connectivity between planned defence housing, industry precincts, and operational hubs, directly supporting the State’s role in delivering on AUKUS commitments.
- Westport enablement - strengthening east west freight movements, reducing congestion on alternative routes, and supporting the Western Trade Coast as a nationally significant industrial and export hub.
- Economic stimulus - providing immediate construction activity, sustained employment opportunities, and long-term productivity gains through efficient transport networks.
- Integrated growth - aligning land use, housing, industry, and freight strategies in a way that maximises land release potential and avoids fragmented, inefficient development patterns.
- Targeted government spending to address road safety - providing clear and direct spending which addresses road safety, and which addresses a range of industrial sectors that benefit through road infrastructure projects.
By working with the State Government and our neighbours, we’re pushing for solutions that keep everyone moving safely.
Partnerships like this mean better outcomes for everyone who lives, works, or drives here.
