Jarrahdale boosts trail access with new Gooralong Carpark

Jarrahdale’s appeal as a top trails destination continues to grow, with the completion of the new Gooralong Carpark on Atkins Street.

A key piece of tourism infrastructure, the carpark will make it easier for visitors to access the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale’s iconic Kitty’s Gorge trail. With 30 spaces, it provides a safe, convenient place to park, easing overflow and helping protect the surrounding Serpentine National Park.

Delivered by the Shire on time and within budget, the project was supported by an $8 million Australian Government investment in the Peel Regional Trails project, through the Priority Community Infrastructure Program.

The carpark was designed to minimise environmental impact, with the Shire working alongside the State Government and Grasstrees Australia to protect much of the native vegetation. This included the careful preservation of grass trees, some of which are up to 200 years old. Salvaged trees will be repurposed for future landscaping projects. Environmental protections also extended to local wildlife, with a qualified zoologist engaged to inspect potential nesting trees and ensure the safety of a small number of black cockatoos found in the area.

The new carpark supports Jarrahdale’s ongoing efforts to meet the criteria for WA Trail Town accreditation, a program run by Trails WA and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.

Towns are assessed across a range of criteria, including infrastructure such as carparks, signage and amenities. The program also considers the overall visitor experience.

Comments attributable to Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale President Rob Coales:

“The new Gooralong Carpark is a great win for Jarrahdale. It makes it easier for people to enjoy the trails, takes pressure off the National Park, and helps us take another step towards becoming a recognised Trail Town.

“It’s been designed with the environment in mind and shows how the Shire is delivering practical projects that support both our community and our natural spaces.”
