Western Australian artist Sioux Tempestt has had her colourful design installed on a new bus shelter on Abernethy Road, Byford last month.

In December, the Shire put a call out for artists to submit their designs for the new bus shelter that best reflected the Byford community, lifestyle and location.

The design brief stated that submissions were to include themes such as school, community and the natural environment with the Shire’s Public Art Assessment Panel judging Ms Tempestt’s design as having responded best to the brief.

The accomplished Mount Lawley artist’s design, titled Flourish, is based on the native flora of the area and signifies the vibrancy and energy of life.

Ms Tempestt said her design can be likened to examining the surrounding bushland in detail under a microscope.

“The different plants species are complex in their genetic makeup, comprising of symmetry and wonder; I’ve interpreted this through bold shapes and lines,” she said.

Ms Tempestt has experience with large-scale murals, photography and graphic design.

Shire President Michelle Rich said the new artwork successfully addressed the broad vision for the site and gave an accurate representation of the natural environment of the Byford area.

“I would like to thank everyone who submitted their designs and congratulate Sioux on her fantastic mural,” Cr Rich said.

“Public art is an important addition to our local community and contributes to the overall amenity of the area.”

The Shire now has three bus shelters with artwork incorporated in their structure, with the other shelters installed at Plaistowe Boulevard, next to Bill Hicks Reserve in Byford, and Kardan Boulevard, near Byford West Primary School, last year.
