The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale and Mundijong Police have joined forces to remind residents to be safe on the road as part of National Road Safety Week.

National Road Safety Week runs from November 15-22 and aims to highlight the impact of road trauma and ways to reduce road crashes and fatalities.

Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said the Council was committed to improving the safety and standard of its local road network with more than $3.5 million committed in its 2020/21 Budget to upgrade roads, footpaths and drainage.

“While we work to improve the safety and standard of our local road network, we all have a shared responsibility when on the road,” Cr Rich said.

“It is important we all are courteous while on the road and look out for one another to ensure we aren’t just another statistic.”

Mundijong Police Station Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Jeremy Petersen said tragically that on average 1200 people were killed on Australian roads each year.

“National Road Safety Awareness Week provides us with a great platform to remind everyone to be safe while on the road whether you are driving a car or truck, or riding a motorcycle or bike,” Snr Sgt Petersen said.

“It is up to everyone to follow the road rules to ensure everyone gets to their destination safely.

“Please slow down and do not speed, please don’t use your mobile phone while driving, don’t drink and drive and don’t drive tired.”

Cr Rich and the Shire had signed up to the National Road Safety Week’s “Pledge to drive so others survive” campaign and encouraged to sign up and show their support.

The Shire is also advocating for $79 million to deliver its Hypergrowth Road Upgrade Plan to improve 129 kilometres of road throughout our region.
