The extraordinary contributions of volunteers across our Shire will be celebrated from 19 to 25 May
during National Volunteer Week 2025.
This year’s theme, ‘Something for Everyone’, highlights the many ways people can get involved in
volunteering and celebrates the diverse and essential roles volunteers play in shaping a connected,
resilient Shire.
Shire President Rob Coales said the week provides an opportunity to not only acknowledge the vital
work of local volunteers, but also to encourage broader community engagement.
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of our Shire. From sporting clubs and community groups to environmental volunteers and emergency services, their generosity and commitment make our community stronger,” President Coales said.
“We are proud to celebrate their contributions and say thank you during National Volunteer Week.”
The centrepiece of the week’s celebrations will be the SJ Volunteer Sundowner, held on Thursday,
22 May 2025 from 6.00pm to 8.00pm at the Byford and Districts Country Club.
The evening will feature special guest Caitlin Bassett, former Australian Diamonds netball captain,
dual World Champion and gold medallist. Caitlin will share her inspiring story and speak about
leadership, resilience and the impact volunteers have on communities.
The sundowner is open to all and will offer an opportunity for community members to come together,
celebrate, and show appreciation for the many individuals who give their time and energy for the
benefit of others.
In addition to the sundowner, the Shire will also be promoting a free online webinar during the week,
offering practical guidance to local clubs and organisations on how to attract and retain volunteers.
A range of resources and tools will also be made available to support community groups in building
strong volunteer networks.
