The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale will enter the Restricted Burning Period on Tuesday 1 October.
During this period, property owners may burn one pile of garden waste at a time (maximum 1 cubic metre) without a permit, provided they follow safety rules:
-
Maintain a 3-metre clearance around the burn, keeping it away from trees, power lines, fences, and buildings.
-
Burns can be lit after 6pm, with additional garden waste added until 11pm. All fires must be fully extinguished before midnight.
-
Only dry garden waste from your property can be burned — no household rubbish, plastics, pallets, cardboard, or building materials.
-
Stay with the fire at all times and have water, rakes, or shovels ready.
-
Let your neighbours know 72 hours in advance before burning.
-
No burning on Sundays, public holidays, or when the fire danger rating is high or above.
-
No accelerants may be used.
A permit from your local Fire Control Officer is required for any burns larger than 1 cubic metre or outside these conditions. Fines may apply for non-compliance.
To keep up to date with fire danger ratings, residents can subscribe to the SJ SMS Alert Service, but it is also recommended to check EmergencyWA’s website or app for real-time alerts and warnings.
