Timed parking to support Byford businesses

With the new Byford train station now open, the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale has introduced free, four-hour timed parking in parts of the Byford town centre to ensure shoppers can continue to easily access local businesses.

Timed parking will apply along Evans Way, George Street and Pitman Way, helping to keep bays free for customers while encouraging commuters to use the 400 new dedicated parking bays available at the Public Transport Authority-managed Byford Station car park.

Shire President Rob Coales said the initiative was about supporting local businesses and making the Byford town centre more welcoming and accessible.

“We know how important it is for people to be able to quickly and easily find a parking spot when visiting local shops, services and cafes,” President Coales said.

“By introducing timed free parking of four hours, we’re making sure bays turn over regularly, giving everyone a fair chance to park close to where they want to shop. This is a positive step for our town centre and for the businesses that are the heart of our community.”

Sharlene Sandiana, who has owned and operated Cape and Scissors Hair and Beauty Salon in the town centre for the past 12 years, said that the change to timed free parking was welcome.

“With the train station coming, some of the customers, especially the ones that have been getting their hair done by my team for years, were definitely worried about not being able to find parking,” she said.

“It’s really great to see the Shire jumping on this before it becomes a problem. I’m glad parking will still be free. Hopefully, the Shire can also find a way to build more bays nearby, as the area gets busier and busier.”

Community feedback collected last year showed strong support for the parking management plan, with a majority of the 91 submissions backing timed parking.

There will be no cost for parking, only a four-hour limit. Rangers will take a commonsense approach by focusing on education first, with infringements only issued when necessary.

Staff permits are also available for businesses to allow all-day parking in designated areas. To apply, visit www.sjshire.wa.gov.au and search ‘Parking’.
