A child’s education begins long before their first day of school. It is important to encourage good learning habits and help children feel supported within a learning environment.

School holiday activities

Every school holidays, the library holds a range of free activities. To receive the details to your inbox before everyone else – register for Out and About in SJ.

Better Beginnings

The library supports the state-wide family literacy program through a variety of activities and resources. There are three free kits available:

  • Every baby born in the Shire can receive the literacy Better Beginnings bag from the Child Health Nurse.
  • Kindergarten Kits are distributed by library staff to all kindergarten students.

Book Bugs Club

Book Bugs Club is our reading reward program for Year 1 students. Children are required to be library members to join the Book Bugs Club. Members need to visit the library, and stamp their reward card 10 times. They will then be eligible for their reward, which is a certificate and a library bag. Please note that our Book Bugs program is being run online while we are closed to the public. For more information on how to take part click here.

Bookworm Club

The Bookworm Club is our reading reward program for Year 3 students. Children are required to be library members to join the Bookworm Club. Members must visit the library, read certain genres of books and explain the book to a library staff member to earn a stamp for their reward card. Their reward is a certificate and a library bag. Please note that our Bookworm program is being run online while we are closed to the public.  For more information on how to take part click here.

Rhyme Time

Come and share songs and rhymes with your baby.  Rhyme Time is held at  Byford Hall,  9 Clifton St, Byford every Monday 10.30 am - 11 am am, this session is suitable for children aged 0 to 2, although children of all ages are more than welcome to join in.

Rhyme Time is aimed at developing early literacy skills as well as providing an opportunity for you to socialise with other parents.

Better Beginnings Library Rhyme Time

Story Time

Held at  Byford Hall,  9 Clifton St, Byford every Monday 9.30 am -10 am, this session is suitable for children aged 2 to 5, although children of all ages are more than welcome to join in. Storytime  is designed to support parents in reading to children and to build early literacy and social skills. The session includes a take home craft activity. 

Lego Club

Lego Club is held on the second Saturday of each month at 9.30am and is suitable for ages 5+. No bookings required.
