Tonkin Highway Extension and Thomas Road Upgrade | Proposed Temporary Road Closure – Orton Road between Timbrel Road (formerly Hopkinson Road) and Bullock Drive
In accordance with Section 3.50 of the Local Government Act 1995, notice is hereby given that the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale is required to temporarily close Orton Road between Bullock Drive and Timbrel Road (formerly Hopkinson Road).
These changes will take effect from early-May 2026 to late-July 2026 as part of the Tonkin Highway Extension and Thomas Road Upgrade (THETRU) Project and associated works.
Project Overview
As part of the THETRU Project, Tonkin Highway is being extended 14 kilometres from Thomas Road to South Western Highway as a four-lane dual carriageway. To enable drainage and pavement construction for the new Orton Road and Tonkin Highway intersection, Orton Road will be temporarily closed between Bullock Drive and Timbrel Road.
Bullock Drive and Hopkinson Road will remain open during these works. Access to properties on Orton Road will be maintained for local access only. For access to properties east of the closure, access will be via Oliver Road (formerly Hopkinson Road). For access to properties west of the closure, access will be via Orton Road from Kargotich Road (see map overleaf).
This closure is intended to:
- enhance road safety;
- upgrade local drainage networks; and
- support traffic movements during future stages of construction.
Bushfire safety and emergency response are key considerations in the planning process. The project team is working closely with the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) to ensure emergency access routes are maintained during construction and are incorporated into the final road design.
