The Y’s Serpentine Jarrahdale Community Recreation Centre has taken home a national AUSactive People’s Choice Award, celebrating the Byford centre’s contribution to the health, fitness and wellbeing of its local community.
The centre was announced as the winner of People’s Choice Medium Sized Business of the Year at the 2026 AUSactive National Awards Gala at Sydney Town Hall on Friday 11 September.
Managed by the Y WA on behalf of the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale, the centre was also named a finalist for Leisure Centre of the Year and Multiservice Business of the Year, making the national award win a significant achievement for the centre and its team.
The AUSactive Awards celebrate outstanding people, businesses, programs and suppliers making a meaningful impact across Australia’s active health, fitness and wellness industry.
Y WA Serpentine Jarrahdale Community Recreation Centre Manager Nicole Little said the national recognition was a wonderful reflection of the team’s commitment to creating a welcoming place for everyone.
“Winning the People’s Choice Award is an incredible achievement and a wonderful recognition of the team’s commitment to our community,” Ms Little said.
“What makes the Centre so special is the diversity of people who walk through our doors every day. From babies experiencing our crèche for the first time, to children learning new skills, young people playing sport, adults working towards their health and fitness goals and seniors staying active and connected, there is something here for everyone.
“Our goal is to create an environment where people feel welcome, supported and encouraged to flourish, and this award is a great reflection of the passion our team brings to that every day.
“Our relationship with the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale is an important part of what makes this Centre successful. We value the positive and collaborative way we work together, and the shared commitment to ensuring the community has a place where everyone feels welcome and has opportunities to be active, connected and supported.”
Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale President Rob Coales said the national award was a fantastic recognition of the Centre’s role in bringing the community together.
“The Serpentine Jarrahdale Community Recreation Centre is much more than a place for sport and fitness — it’s a genuine community hub where people of all ages can connect, participate and feel welcome.
“To see that recognised through the People’s Choice Award is a tremendous achievement and reflects the work of the Y WA team in creating a centre that supports the health, wellbeing and connection of our growing community.
“We’re incredibly proud to see a facility serving our local community recognised on the national stage, and I congratulate everyone involved in making the Centre such an important part of life in Serpentine Jarrahdale,” said President Coales.
A true centre for everyone, the Y’s Serpentine Jarrahdale Community Recreation Centre is a hub for people of all ages and stages of life, with families able to engage with the Centre from as early as eight weeks old.
From its crèche and children’s programs to Outside School Hours Care, gymnastics, youth sport, fitness, social sport and activities for older adults, the Centre provides opportunities for the community to be active, connected and engaged under one roof.
The Centre also features a 24/7 health club, group fitness classes, gymnastics programs, indoor sports courts, social sports competitions, childcare services and flexible community and function spaces.
The national People’s Choice win highlights the breadth of the Serpentine Jarrahdale Community Recreation Centre’s role within the Byford community – not simply as a place to exercise, but as a community hub supporting connection, participation and wellbeing across generations.
