Update on Kargotich Road heavy vehicle movement concerns

Published on Tuesday, 16 June 2026 at 3:13:57 PM

The Shire has initiated several actions to better understand and address these concerns:

Traffic monitoring:• On 2 June 2026, the Shire deployed a surveillance camera trailer equipped with
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology on Kargotich Road.
• The system is capturing both northbound and southbound traffic data.
• Monitoring will continue until the end of June 2026.

Identification and engagement of operators
• The data collected will enable the Shire to identify vehicles and trucks using this section
of road.
• The information will enable engagement with haulage operators to cease using Kargotich
Road.

Speed monitoring and enforcement:• Shire Officers are analysing data collected from traffic classifiers in May 2026.
• This information will support engagement with WA Police regarding speed enforcement
in the area.

While residents have raised the potential for truck diversion signage, Main Roads Western
Australia (MRWA) has advised this would contravene the Road Traffic Code as Kargotich Road
is legally accessible to “as-of-right” heavy vehicles under current regulations.

Despite these constraints, the Shire is continuing to explore all available avenues. This includes
ongoing discussions with MRWA, WA Police and other stakeholders.
