Confirming its reputation as the go-to destination for young families and first-time home buyers, the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale has once again been named Western Australia’s fastest growing local government.
According to new data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Serpentine Jarrahdale was the only local government area in WA to record a population increase of more than 5% in the 2023–24 financial year.
First home buyers from across the State - and around the world - continue to flock to the Shire, drawn by its ideal blend of country lifestyle, vibrant community, and proximity to Perth’s CBD. Nationally, the Shire also ranked third in population growth among all local governments across Australia.
Shire President Rob Coales said the statistics were a clear reflection of the enduring appeal of the unique SJ community.
“We’re proud to once again lead the State in population growth – it’s a clear sign that Serpentine Jarrahdale offers something truly special,” President Coales said.
“The growth and resilience we’re seeing are a powerful reflection of our community’s strength, and these figures simply confirm what we already know; SJ is a great place to live, raise a family, and build a future.
“But with this rapid growth comes real responsibility. Our demographic is unique, and often home to young families who are among the most vulnerable to social and economic pressures.
“We have warmly welcomed government support for infrastructure projects in our region, for example the $1bn Tonkin Highway extension which will start construction this year.
“However, to meet the needs of our growing local population, we need targeted investment in infrastructure from all levels of government to ensure our liveability into the future, otherwise, we risk falling behind.
“With the right support, there’s no limit to what this amazing community can achieve.”
The Shire’s rapid growth has been fuelled by a combination of strong internal migration from across Western Australia, significant overseas migration, and a notable baby boom, with a 20% net natural increase recorded in the past year alone.
The Shire’s population is expected to reach a milestone 40,000 residents by the end of 2025, and is projected to grow to more than 95,000 by 2046.
