Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale President Rob Coales CSM successfully completed the nationally recognised Diploma of Local Government – Elected Member through the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA). The qualification was formally presented during WALGA's Annual General Meeting this week.

The Diploma of Local Government – Elected Member is designed specifically for members of local governments and equips participants with advanced knowledge and skills in governance, strategic decision-making, financial management, planning, community engagement and legislative responsibilities.

President Coales said completing the qualification was a valuable opportunity to further strengthen the knowledge and skills needed to represent the community effectively.

"Local government decisions have a direct impact on our residents, businesses and future growth for years to come, so it is important that Elected Members continue to invest in their professional development.

"The Diploma has further strengthened my understanding of governance, strategic planning, financial oversight and community leadership, providing valuable insights that will assist me in my role as Shire President.

"I am proud to have completed this nationally recognised qualification and grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside Elected Members from across Western Australia who share a commitment to serving their communities."

President Coales said ongoing learning was essential to ensuring local governments remained responsive to the needs of their communities.

"Local government is constantly evolving, and it is important that we continue to build our knowledge and capability to meet new challenges and opportunities.

"I look forward to applying what I have learned to help deliver positive outcomes for our community and support the long-term success of the Shire."
