As we head into the festive season, here’s everything you need to know about Shire opening hours and bin collection changes during the Christmas and New Year period.

Christmas and New Year closures

Shire centres will have adjusted hours during the Christmas and New Year period. The following information outlines when each centre will be closed and when services will resume.If you need urgent assistance during the closure period, please contact our After-Hours Call Centre on (08) 9526 1111.This line can assist with matters relating to community safety, Ranger issues and essential services.

Library Service Changes

Mobile Library Van

The Mobile Library Van will complete its final visits for 2025 in the week leading up to Christmas, with services finishing early on Wednesday 24 December.

Final 2025 sessions:

  • Serpentine Falls Tourist Village – Tuesday 16 December

  • Bruno Gianatti Hall, Jarrahdale – Thursday 18 December

  • Mundijong CRC – Monday 22 December

  • Whitby Sales Office – Tuesday 23 December

  • St John’s Ambulance Hall, Serpentine – Wednesday 24 December (closing early at 11.30am)

Services resume from Monday, 5 January 2026, returning to the usual weekly schedule.

First 2026 sessions:

  • Mundijong CRC – Monday 5 January

  • Whitby Sales Office – Tuesday 6 January

  • St John’s Ambulance Hall, Serpentine – Wednesday 7 January

  • Bruno Gianatti Hall, Jarrahdale – Thursday 8 January

  • Serpentine Falls Tourist Village – Tuesday 13 January

Books on Wheels

Books on Wheels will take a short break over the festive period:

  • Last delivery for 2025: Tuesday 16 December

  • First delivery for 2026: Tuesday 13 January

Bin day changes

Christmas week

  • No bin collection on Thursday 25 December (Christmas Day).
  • Thursday collections will occur on Friday 26 December.
  • Friday collections will occur on Saturday 27 December.

New Year week

  • No bin collection on Thursday 1 January 2026 (New Year’s Day).
  • Thursday collections will occur on Friday 2 January.
  • Friday collections will occur on Saturday 3 January.

Normal scheduling resumes the following week.

Fire season reminder

The Shire is 97% bushfire prone. Please check the daily Fire Danger Rating and stay up to date with Total Fire Bans and Restricted Burning Periods via the EmergencyWA website.

Sign up to the SJ SMS Alert Service to receive fire ban notifications by text message. The service is free and suitable for residents, ratepayers and contractors who may be affected by fire restrictions.

  • This is an outbound-only service.
  • It is not an emergency alert system.
  • Always call 000 if you see a fire.

Non-urgent requests — such as maintenance issues, road concerns, graffiti or general enquiries — can be submitted at any time through the Request and Report It portal.


Requests will be actioned once Shire operations resume.
