Closure of Hopkinson Road
As part of the Tonkin Highway Extension and Thomas Road Upgrade, the Shire plans to permanently close the northern and southern intersections of Hopkinson Road where they meet Thomas Road in Byford. These changes will help support the long-term safety and efficiency of the upgraded road network.
What you need to know if you use Hopkinson Road
From late September 2025, both intersections where Hopkinson Road meets Thomas Road (north and south) will close permanently.
This change is part of the Tonkin Highway Extension and Thomas Road Upgrade (THETRU) project, which includes major works like widening Thomas Road and building a new interchange at Tonkin Highway.
This is a State Government project being managed by The Tonkin Extension Alliance (TEA). If you have any questions regarding the project, please contact TEA via the below channels:

Why the closures are happening
- To make Thomas Road safer
- To improve traffic flow in the long run
- To support the new Tonkin Highway interchange
What this means for you
- You’ll no longer be able to turn onto or off Hopkinson Road at Thomas Road (north or south).
- You'll need to use alternate access points — these are clearly marked on the maps below.
- Plan ahead if you regularly use these intersections.
Drive safe, go steady
Some of the alternate routes run through quieter, semi-rural areas where you'll be sharing the road with local traffic — including children, school zones and horses.
Please:
- Take it slow while you get used to the new routes
- Watch out for small humans – they may be focused on getting to school and not traffic
- Watch out for riders and horses — they’ve got every right to be there too
- Pass horses wide and slow – at least 2m from the horse and at 20km per hour
- If a horse reacts badly, please pull over and give way to the horse and rider (to allow the rider to get control of the horse).
This change will take some getting used to — we appreciate you taking care and keeping everyone safe.
