National Reconciliation Week 2025

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to reflect and learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Background

National Reconciliation Week is held at the same time every year: 27 May to 3 June every year. These dates are significant as they commemorate two important milestones in Australia's reconciliation journey - the 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision, respectively. It started as the Week of Prayer for Reconciliation in 1993 and was supported by Australia's major faith communities. In 1996, the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation launched Australia's first National Reconciliation Week. In 2001, Reconciliation Australia was established to continue providing nationwide leadership on reconciliation. In the same year, approximately 300,000 people walked across Sydney Harbour Bridge as part of National Reconciliation Week-and subsequently across bridges in cities and towns-to show their support for reconciliation.

Today, National Reconciliation Week is celebrated in workplaces, schools and early learning services, community organisations and groups, and by individuals Australia-wide.

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2025 is Bridging Now to Next which reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future. Bridging Now to Next calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.

SJ Shire Activities

As part of this important week, the Shire is honoured to present local Noongar artist Fiona Reidy from Djinda Kaal Dreaming Aboriginal Art in two community-based workshops. Fiona is currently working with the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale to create culturally significant artwork which will be used towards the Shire’s Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan. These immersive workshops provide a unique opportunity to connect with Aboriginal culture through shared storytelling and art.
