The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale is calling on young people to help design and paint a mural at Byford Skate Park on February 8 as part of the Ride4Ash Urban Art Project.

Youth who regularly attended the Shire’s Drop-In sessions at Briggs Park expressed a desire to paint a mural as a commemorative piece to celebrate the life of local young person, Ashley Graham, who frequently used the skate park, but sadly passed away in 2018.

The project has been six months in the making, with a group of young people working together to secure funding to complete the mural.

After months of hard work, they were successful in receiving a $2112 grant from DrugAware WA as a part of the YCulture Regional Grant round, with support and guidance from the Shire’s Youth Development team.

Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said it was good to see young people coming together to create something memorable in recognition of their lost friend.

“The work that these young people have put in over the past six months with support from our Youth Development team is to be commended,” Cr Rich said.

“To secure the grant the young people had to seek local letters of support for the project and create a budget using quotes from service providers and develop a project timeline.”

The mural will be designed by the young people and facilitated by local urban artist Dan Duggan from 10am-2pm, 8 February 2020.

“I cannot wait to see what the young people come up with for the mural with Dan’s help,” Cr Rich said.

The artwork will be officially revealed at the Shire’s Youth Week event in April with details coming soon.

The Ride4Ash Urban Art Project is proudly sponsored by Regional Arts WA and by Healthway to promote the Drug Aware message.
