Strengthening our community through local stories for Mental Health Week

Published on Saturday, 10 October 2020 at 12:00:00 AM

Five local residents will share their personal stories about what they do to maintain positive mental health and to encourage others to take proactive steps to remain mentally healthy.

As part of Mental Health Week, celebrated from 10-16 October 2020, the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale will publish four videos, showcasing stories of local residents and how they embody this year’s Mental Health Week theme - “Strengthening our Community – Live, Learn, Work, Play”.

The videos will highlight the stories of Zumba Gold instructor Ann Newson, Waste Is My Resource business owner Robyn Brown, Mundijong Pharmacy pharmacist Raj Gurung and Byford Secondary College students and South Fremantle Colts footballers Corey Stanley and Riley Colborne.

The Shire will also be hosting a series of community BBQs during the week in collaboration with the SJ Men's Shed, Jarrahdale Fire Brigade and Keysbrook Community Group.

Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said the Shire was committed to providing information that empowered residents to discuss mental health for their own benefit, as well as encouraging them to have a conversation with their family and friends.

“It is great that we are able to share these four stories and encourage people of all ages to prioritise their mental health - not just during Mental Health Week, but all the time,” Cr Rich said.

“One of the objectives of our recently adopted Health and Wellbeing Strategy is to grow healthy and active lifestyles, together.

“As we begin our local recovery from COVID-19, it is more important than ever that we look after our mental health and make sure we check in on loved ones around us.”

“A big thank you to Ann, Robyn, Raj, Corey and Riley for sharing their tips on maintaining good mental health.”

The videos will be published throughout Mental Health Week, starting on Saturday, 10 October, on the Shire’s website and social media channels.

This campaign follows on from the successful Men’s and Women’s Health Week campaigns delivered by the Shire earlier this year.
