The new facilities were officially opened at a Community Sports Day, with free sports and activities on offer to more than 200 parents and children who attended, including local sporting clubs.
Works on the lower oval included remediating drainage issues, a new cricket pitch and multi-use cricket and tee-ball nets, while new goal posts were installed on both ovals.
Sport will be able to be played at night on both ovals for the first time, with four new light towers installed on the lower oval and the upper oval’s light towers replaced.
Briggs Park is currently home to Byford Bushrangers Tee-ball Club, Mundijong Centrals Junior Football Club and Serpentine Jarrahdale Cricket Club, who combined have more than 1000 members.
Financial support for the project was provided by the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale, the State Government’s Local Projects, Local Jobs program and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries – Sport and Recreation.
Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale President Michelle Rich said it was fantastic that local sporting clubs now had access to modern, purpose-built facilities to support them to grow their clubs and help them be successful on and off the field.
“The upgrades also mean the park’s two ovals can now be used year-round, with the option of hosting much larger competitions and events,” Cr Rich said.
“On behalf of the Council I would like to thank the State Government for their support in helping make this project a reality.
“I would also like to acknowledge Shire staff and the contractor, Tracc Civil, for their work on this project and completing it on time and on budget.
“Thanks also to the local sporting clubs for the patience during the works and we wish them every success going forward.”
Minister Sport and Recreation, Honourable Mick Murray MLA said he was pleased that the State Government had been able to contribute to improving the facilities at Briggs Park which will be enjoyed by local cricket, tee-ball and football clubs as well as the local community.
“The improved drainage and new cricket and football facilities will help teams play their best, and the new lighting will allow more players and teams more time to practise their skills," he said.
“The State Government is keen to provide sport and recreation projects such as this that benefit the whole community and support local job creation and this project is a good example of what can be achieved.”
