The SJ Reuse Shop opened with a bang as more than 100 residents turned out to find a bargain and help save items from going to landfill last weekend.

The shop proved a popular new addition to the Serpentine Jarrahdale community right from the get-go, with more than 65 purchases made and a large number of residents donating items to the shop across its first two days.

This early success resulted in 141 kilograms of wood, 125kg of plastic and a whopping 394kg of metal being diverted from landfill across the opening two days.

Some of the most popular items included bicycles, fishing and camping equipment, outdoor furniture, plant pots and tools.

The opening of the shop coincided with National Buy Nothing New Month, an initiative that aims to increase awareness of waste consumption and landfill across the month of October.

Located at the Watkins Road Waste Transfer Station and Recycling Centre, the SJ Reuse Shop is open on Saturdays and Sundays, 9am – 3pm.
