Trees of significant community or historical value can now be recorded on the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale’s Significant Tree Register, which aims to provide further protection for the trees, as well as recognising the important roles trees play in community health and wellbeing.

At its December 2021 meeting, the Serpentine Jarrahdale Council endorsed the Significant Tree Register, which recognises and records trees that are based on public land and are special or significant to the Serpentine Jarrahdale area, such as the Abernethy Road Tree Tunnel and the Oldest Jarrah Tree on Karnup Road.

The register does not apply to trees on private property.

Having these identified on the register will ensure they are taken into account and protected for the benefit of both our community and environment.

Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said the register would play a crucial role in protecting the natural history of Serpentine Jarrahdale.

“By being on the Significant Tree Register, a tree is awarded extra protection when it comes to future development in the Shire,” Cr Rich said.

“This will help us maintain the rural character of our Shire while also ensuring the longevity of these trees which play such an important role in our environment.”

The Significant Tree Register is a strategy identified in the Shire’s 2018-2028 Rural and Urban Forest Strategy to protect historic, heritage and cultural values.

Any member of the community is welcomed to submit a nomination to the Significant Tree Register.

An individual tree, a group of trees, or a larger area such as a road or reserve, can be considered for inclusion on the register.
