The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale has been recognised at the 2020 Planning Institute of Australia WA Awards for Excellence for its online Community Equestrian Education Module.

Awarded Best Planning Idea – Small Project, the interactive module provides a unique user experience for residents and the broader community to access information on all matters related to equestrian management, and how new ideas and techniques can be adapted.

Shire President Michelle Rich said the award from the Planning Institute of Australia WA was great recognition for the work the Shire was doing to support and promote its thriving equine community.

“In 2019 the Shire held an Equine Community Forum and feedback from horse owners was that they wanted educational materials that were relevant to land and properties in Serpentine Jarrahdale,” Cr Rich said.

“Shire officers worked with the community and local company Labbit to develop the interactive module, which provides an innovative information platform regarding the keeping of horses. This is done in an online virtual equestrian setting located within the Shire.

“The interactive module is all about supporting horse owners in the Shire and making it easier for them to access information they need.”

The Community Equestrian Education Module provides information on fencing, hay sheds, horse arenas, irrigation, manure management, paddock shelters, indoor stables, wash down bays and weed management.

As part of the Shire’s ongoing commitment to support its equine community, it has established an Equine Advisory Group, which has community representation from a range of equine disciplines.

The Equine Advisory Group will provide the Shire with advice in regards to the needs and priorities of the Serpentine Jarrahdale Equine Community.
