The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale congratulates Labor candidate Hugh Jones on his election to the seat of Darling Range and the return of the McGowan Government for a second term.

With the fastest growing population of any local government area in Western Australia, the 2021 State Election provided an opportunity for the Shire to secure support in filling funding gaps to deliver critical community infrastructure.

In mid-2020, Council endorsed a comprehensive list of local priorities which formed the basis of its State election campaign advocacy efforts.

The following projects identified by Council received funding commitments from Premier Mark McGowan and Mr Jones:

  • $30.6 million for a new health hub in Byford
  • $18 million to upgrade Kargotich, Orton and Soldiers roads
  • $11.5 million to build Stage Four of Byford Secondary College
  • $1.3 million towards a nature playground and water splash park
  • $40,000 towards new facilities and trail improvements in Jarrahdale

Last August, the McGowan Government also committed $20 million for the Shire to deliver stage 1 of the Keirnan Park Recreation Precinct.

Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said receiving more than $80 million in new funding commitments from the returned McGowan Government was a testament to the Shire’s forward planning in having a comprehensive list of priorities endorsed by the Council ahead of the election.

“Council’s hard work has paid off for our local community,” Cr Rich said.

“A lot of research, effort and community feedback went into these priorities. All councillors had input, showing the projects identified are all relevant to meet local needs.

“This huge investment in the future of our region shows that by working with the State Government we can continue to grow a healthier, more connected community, together.

“We also welcome the other commitments made by Mr Jones and the McGowan Government throughout the campaign which will help deliver improved infrastructure and community facilities for our community.”

Cr Rich also thanked all candidates who contested the seat of Darling Range, and acknowledged outgoing Darling Range MLA Alyssa Hayden.

“Alyssa has been a passionate advocate for the people of Darling Range and we acknowledge her service to the electorate over the past 2 ½ years,” Cr Rich said.

“We look forward to working with our new local State MP Hugh Jones as the re-elected McGowan Government delivers on these vital community commitments over the coming years.”
