Four local residents have been recognised for their winning gardens in the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale’s inaugural SJ Garden Competition.

The competition included four categories - Native Garden, Waterwise Garden, Traditional Garden and Rural Garden - which represented the different type of properties located in the Shire.

The competition winners, announced in an awards video published on the Shire’s digital channels at 6pm on Wednesday, 21 October, are:

Native Garden

Gary Dore of Jarrahdale

Waterwise Garden

Yvette Dowell of Whitby

Traditional Garden

Fiona McCallum, from Serpentine

Rural Garden

Ian Wheeler and Megan Bosch of Darling Downs

Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said the SJ Garden Competition was held to recognise the beautiful gardens within the Shire and encourage residents to improve their own spaces while reaping the health benefits of being active and outdoors.

Cr Rich congratulated the four winners and commended them on their great gardens.

“The four gardens are all very different, showcasing colourful flowers, hardy natives, tropical fruits and beautiful spaces to relax,” Cr Rich said.

“They all show what you can achieve with a love for gardening and great imagination.

“I would also like to thank everybody else who entered. The quality of entrants was fantastic, which made it a difficult job for the judges.”

The winner of each category received a $200 garden voucher sponsored by local gardening businesses, Australian Native Nursery, Forestvale Trees and Mundijong Garden Supplies and Hire with runner up prizes of $50 provided by SJ Plant Supply.

Thank you to our generous sponsors and judges for their support in the SJ Garden Competition.
