More than 100 people participated in an emergency preparedness exercise in Jarrahdale recently as part of the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale’s ongoing commitment to our shared responsibility of supporting residents and emergency service workers being prepared for this year’s bushfire season.

The exercise, carried out in Millbrook Estate on Saturday 24 October, was delivered in partnership by the Shire, local Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades, our Bushfire Awareness Team and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES).

Shire President Michelle Rich thanked everyone who participated in the exercise.

“With 97 per cent of the Shire declared as bushfire prone, we all have a shared responsibility in reducing our risk of fire,” Cr Rich said.

“I would like to thank everyone for giving up their time on the AFL grand final afternoon and participating in the exercise which allowed emergency service to develop further levels of awareness and understanding of the area.

“It was also an opportunity for emergency service personnel to work closely with residents and discuss property access and layout, property management, capability of available resources and safety considerations for them, their families and fire fighters in the event on an incident.”

The Shire’s Bushfire Awareness Team also participated in the exercise and provided residents with resources and information including Fire Chat, Bushfire Planning Toolkit and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attraction’s prescribed burn schedule.

The exercise finished with a community BBQ at the Jarrahdale Fire Station.

Residents who would like support or resources from the Shire’s Bushfire Awareness Team can contact the team on 0403 818 830.

Bushfire mitigation work is planned for Millbrook Estate with under-pruning to be carried out on verges and thinning out of fuel loadings at Korribinjal Reserve. The works were made possible by DFES funding and will be carried out in the coming weeks.
