Burn SMART: Planned burning

Published on Thursday, 11 June 2020 at 10:31:52 AM

If you own or manage land in Western Australia it is your responsibility to reduce the risk of bushfire impacting it. When a bushfire enters an area of reduced fuel, the rate of bushfire spread slows and the intensity at which it burns is reduced. This means landholders and firefighters have a better chance of containing the fire and it is less likely to cause damage to property.

One of the most effective ways you can reduce fuel loads and the risk of bushfire is planned burning. Planned burning can help you to reduce the amount of flammable material on your property, potentially reducing the impact of bushfire. However, in the wrong conditions, a planned burn can escape and become an uncontrollable fire. If you plan to burn, plan to Burn SMART.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has developed Burn SMART resources to support planned burning for private landholders about planned burning, and actions to take before, during and after your burn.

The resources supports planned burning in a number of areas including within the Shire. The Burn SMART resources are targeted at small landholders with a property of two hectares or less.

Copies of DFES’ Burnt SMART resources can be downloaded here.

For further information please contact the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale’s Bushfire Ready Group on 0403 818 830.

*If you live outside of the areas mentioned or your property is larger than two hectares, please contact the Shire to receive additional local advice on planned burning.
