The Shire is encouraging local residents to become dementia-aware, with Dementia Action Week celebrated from  21-27 September, 2020.

Dementia Action Week aims to give people a better understanding of what it is like for a person to live with dementia, and ultimately be encouraged to create communities where people with dementia are supported to live a high quality of life with meaning, purpose and value.

Dementia currently affects close to half a million Australians, with that number is set double in the next 25 years, and is the second leading cause of death of Australian men and the leading cause of death among Australian females.

A free Dementia Australia online presentation, Recently Diagnosed with Dementia, will be held from 11am–12pm, Wednesday, 23 September, 2020. For more information and to register, click here.

This free online education and support session is for people living with early stage dementia, as well as for their family, friends and carers.

SJ Men’s Shed is also in the process of becoming a Dementia Friendly Organisation as part of Dementia Australia’s campaign to have groups, businesses and organisations to Dementia Friendly Communities.

The Shire congratulates the SJ Men’s Shed and encourages other businesses and workplaces to start building Dementia Friendly Communities and signup to become a Dementia Friend here.
