The final stage of the Abernethy Road upgrade project involves:

  • the widening of the road at the rail crossing to two lanes each way;
  • the removal and replacement of a section of rail line; and
  • installing two new pedestrian crossing mazes.

The works will be carried out in two stages by the Shire’s contractor, Downer EDI Works Pty Ltd.

Stage 1 works - Complete

Preliminary works such as signal, electrical, communication pits and conduits installation are scheduled for the week commencing Monday, 2 November 2020.

Construction of retaining walls will follow as well as pit installation at the Byford Tavern Car park (north west corner).

Stage 2 works

This involves road widening, rail replacement, and commissioning of the rail crossing and is anticipated to commence in early 2021.

The Shire is working closely with the Public Transport Authority (PTA) to comply with railway shutdown requirements outside of the school holiday period.

Communication and updates to the community will be provided regularly on our website and social media channels.
