Better Builders Keeping SJ Clean

We're proud of our beautiful natural environment, and work hard with our community to keep Serpentine Jarrahdale clean.

Background

The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale is one of the fastest growing Local Governments in Western Australia, between 2011 and 2036 the population is expected to increase by 44,833 persons (242.31% growth). The majority of these new residents are located in newly developed housing estates in the Byford and Mundijong areas. This significant growth means a huge increase in building waste, whilst builders do have rubbish receptacles on site they are often overfilled and don't have lids. As our residents know the Shire is subject to strong easterly winds which means much of this waste is finding its way into our Public Open Spaces and waterways.

What we are doing

The Shire has contacted the 30 - 40 builders that are currently building homes within the Shire to ask them to consider using rubbish receptacles with lids that can be locked. To encourage builders who are doing the right thing we will be featuring 'Better Builders' on this webpage. Patrols of building sites will be increased by the Shire's Compliance Officers.

Who is involved

This project wouldn't be possible without the assistance of Keep Australia Beautiful WA and the Byford Progress Association.

How you can help

Residents are asked to report building sites that are not managing their waste, persons sighted littering on vacant blocks, undeveloped land and reserves by taking a photo including the address and car details and sending them through to .

Byford Progress Association

The Shire is extremely lucky to have litter collection volunteer group who work hard collecting rubbish around Serpentine Jarrahdale. The 700 bags of litter collected by this group in 2010 has increased to 3,000 bags in 2015. It is estimated that 80% of this litter originated from building sites.
