Three local government associations - Town of Kwinana, Serpentine Jarrahdale Shire and Shire of Murray - have joined the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives Water Campaign as part of their commitment to achieving a sustainable water strategy for the Peel Harvey catchment.
This is a program developed for Local Government by ICLEI to provide a framework for local governments to deal with water consumption and environmental water quality related issues. The framework consists of three modules: corporate, community and catchment.
Corporate: 15% reduction in the volume of water consumed in the Shire's operations by the year 2010/11.
Community: Domestic scheme consumption average of 100kL per person per annum within the SJ community by 2012.
Community: 14% reduction in non-domestic scheme water use by 2012. Non-domestic use includes all industrial, commercial and agricultural enterprises that consume scheme water.
To implement actions to improve water quality that achieve a value of 50 points or more for both the Corporate and Community modules of the campaign as determined in accordance with the ICLEI Water Quality Action lists by 2010/11 (ie. 50 points for the corporate module and 50 points for the community module).
