The Old Post Office Tourist Information Centre

Jarrahdale Road, Jarrahdale

Built in 1896, the Old Post Office not only serves as a tourist centre, but also as a local crafts centre and museum, documenting the history of the area. It is home to a large collection of historical records and photos, unique to this museum. The Old Post Office is the starting point of many guided walks, run by the Jarrahdale Heritage Society.

This museum is home to a large collection of machinery and cars from the 20th century. The owner is always happy to tell visitors about each cars history.

The natural bush, gardens and lakes of the Bodhinyana Monastery create an environment conducive to inner peace and contemplation. Visitors are welcome to walk quietly around the public area or to use the hall for silent meditation. Smoking, alcohol and music are not permitted. Most visitors come for the daily offering of the meal at 10.30am and participate in the ancient tradition of the alms round by putting rice in the monk's bowls. After the meal, the senior monk is available to speak informally with the visitors.

'Preserving our rural past for future generations'

The Museum has a huge collection of vintage tractors, most of which are kept in working order by a group of dedicated volunteers. Also a collection of historical farm machinery is on display. Every third Sunday of the month is Tractor Start Up Day.

Opening times: Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays 10am-4pm. Bus tours and school groups welcome by appointment. New members welcome.
