Following significant community consultation, the Shire started a review of the Rural Strategy in 2012.

The Rural Strategy’s main purpose is to preserve and enhance the Shire’s rural character, providing a framework for considered Rural development and subdivision in Serpentine Jarrahdale.

Council adopted the Strategy in 2014, following community consultation, and forwarded this to the Western Australian Planning Commission (WAPC). In December 2016, the WAPC provided in-principle support to the Strategy, subject to modifications.

Shire President, Cr John Erren said, “While the WA Planning Commission is the final decision maker, the Shire, Council and the community developed the Strategy through significant consultation and consideration of relevant planning rationale to reflect local aspirations.”

“There is no legal ability for the Shire to request the WA Planning Commission to reconsider its previous decision, however Council resolved to request the Commission adopt the provisions originally requested by the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale of the Rural Strategy, as adopted post consultation.” said Cr Erren.
