Roses and chocolates will be replaced by books and magazines at the Mundijong Public Library this Valentine’s Day for a special celebration to mark Library Lovers' Day 2018.

Bringing together bookworms from across Australia, Library Lovers’ Day 2018 recognises the invaluable contribution made by libraries and their staff to communities throughout the country.

In the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale, residents are invited to show their appreciation for the Mundijong Public Library by forming a human chain around the building in what is tipped to be Australia’s biggest library hug.

The day will also include a secondhand book sale hosted by the Serpentine Jarrahdale Library Friends, a writing table for people to pen ‘love letters’ to the library, and the opportunity to go on a mystery date with a book.

Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said Library Lovers’ Day 2018 was an opportunity to recognise the important role that libraries and their staff play within local communities.

“Nowhere is the sense of community more alive and clear to see than at the Mundijong Public Library,” Cr Rich said.

“The library is so much more than just a place to borrow books. It’s a space for forming connections, learning about the community, relaxing and having fun. It’s a hub of activity where groups meet, workshops are held and events are hosted.

“When new residents move to an area, one of the first places they often visit is their local library. In that sense, the library represents a gateway into the community and a place where everyone is welcomed and included.

“We are especially lucky to have such enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff at the Mundijong Public Library. Library Lovers’ Day is a great opportunity to check out the Mundijong Public Library, say hi to the team and fall in love with reading.”

Library Lovers Day 2018 gets underway at the Mundijong Public Library at 3.30pm on February 14. A minimum of 120 people is needed to form an unbroken hug around Mundijong Public Library and huggers are encouraged to register by Monday, February 12. A video of the library hug will be filmed at 3.45pm.
