Shire welcomes Federal government infrastructure pledge

The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale has welcomed the Federal Government’s $822 million commitment to fund major infrastructure projects that promise positive economic and social outcomes for the Peel region.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull today announced federal funding for the METRONET rail line extension to Byford and the extension of Tonkin Highway from Thomas Road to South West Highway. The Tonkin Highway extension includes introducing interchanges at key intersections and providing direct access to the airport for Shire residents.

Shire President Cr Michelle Rich welcomed the pledge, saying this commitment clearly shows the success that the Shire has had in advocating for local transport projects.

“The projects announced today will have threefold benefits – they will create local jobs, considerably improve road safety, and importantly activate the Shire and Peel region as a whole.

“The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale is growing rapidly and enhancing our road network, in particular Tonkin Highway, is key to meeting the needs of residents now and into the future,” Cr Rich said.

“Today’s announcement is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of the Shire’s officers, that working with Councilors and the community as a team has delivered this critical infrastructure.

“Importantly this ensures the connectivity throughout the south east metropolitan area and across the Peel region, opening up the region to new opportunities.”

“Improvements to road and rail infrastructure like those green lit by the Federal Government today will result in less traffic congestion, shorter and safer commutes for residents, reduced carbon emissions and increased income from tourism,” she said.
