Curtin University students were given an insight into the many varied and rewarding career options at the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale during a special careers fair on March 14.
Hosted by Curtin University, the Curtin Careers Fair 2018 allowed students to speak with prospective employers about the kind of graduate opportunities, internships and work experience offered by different organisations.
The Shire was represented by members of its Human Resources, Engineering, Planning and Environmental Health teams.
They were one of only nine exhibitors to host a presentation, joining the likes of Bankwest and the Department of Defence.
Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said events like the Curtin Careers Fair were an important way to promote employment opportunities at the Shire and in local government more generally.
“It’s important to actively market the Shire as an employer of choice in order to attract talented employees who’ll best serve the community for many years to come,” Cr Rich said.
“There are a wide range of career pathways available through local government and we want the best and brightest to see the Shire as somewhere they can enjoy a long and vibrant career.
“Having a presence at these kind of events is part of the Shire’s commitment to providing employment pathways for young people entering the workforce.
“It’s also a way that we can open more doors to young people through things like work experience and internship opportunities that give them real-world experience.”
The Curtin Careers Fair 2018 comes after the Shire recently welcomed the first inductees as part of a traineeship program giving employment opportunities to local high school students.
